What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese technique used for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing. Discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 1900s, Reiki is administered by "the laying on of hands," a therapeutic touch technique which has been practiced for thousands of years.
The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words, Rei and Ki. "Rei" means universal, or higher knowledge, or spiritual consciousness. Rei is the wisdom that comes from God or the Higher Self and is the Consciousness which is all-knowing. It understands each person completely and knows the cause of all problems and difficulties and how to heal them.
Ki is life energy, also known as the vital life force or the universal life force. This is the non-physical energy that animates all living things. Ki is also the primary energy of our emotions, thoughts, and spiritual life. If your life energy is low—even if your emotional or mental or spiritual energy is flagging—or, if there is a restriction to the flow of either one, you are more vulnerable to illness. When your life and emotional, mental, and spiritual energy are high and flowing freely, you are less likely to get sick.
It is the higher consciousness called Rei that guides the life energy called Ki in the practice we call Reiki. Therefore, Reiki can be defined at "spiritually guided life energy." Reiki guides itself with its own wisdom rather than requiring the directions of the practitioner who has simply been opened to its flow—to serve as its pathway or conduit—through a process called attunement.
How does Reiki work?
The practice of Reiki consists of the Reiki practitioner using a series of hand positions on or over the client’s body as he or she lies, comfortably and fully clothed, on a massage table. The various positions are held over the body’s seven main energy centers known as "chakras." The chakras correspond to the major glands of the human endocrine system which are related to the functioning of the immune system. There is no "massaging" or physical manipulation of muscles or tissue. There is just light, gentle touch which the client can experience as a sensation of heat, or coolness, or tingling which signals the rebalancing of the energy field. The client may also see colors or images or feel the movement of energy. There is a sense of sleepiness and profound relaxation that occurs as the universal life force flows through the practitioner into the client.
Reiki is an effective treatment modality for many physical and mental/emotional conditions including anxiety, depression, chronic pain of any kind, arthritis, asthma, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, headaches or migraines, conditions of the GI tract or cardiovascular system, back or joint problems. It is especially effective prior to, during, or following chemotherapy or radiation treatments for cancer. And Reiki is an effective adjunct to psychotherapy in that it "opens" the client up to be more amenable to dealing with critical issues in therapy sessions.
Reiki sessions are usually 60-75 minutes in length, and the charge for the first session for a new client is $60. Thereafter, the session charge increases to $70. Package discounts are available as are Gift Certificates. Call Anne at 517.420.8550 to schedule a Reiki treatment session.
Reiki Attunements
What happens during a Reiki session is that the practitioner, who has been "attuned" or "empowered" to receive Ki (the life energy), transfers that energy to the client. The "attunement" is given to the practitioner by a Reiki Master/Teacher during a series of rituals, each of which brings the practitioner to a higher level of receptivity to the life force. The series has the following components: Level I, Level II, Advanced Reiki Training (ART), and Level III or the Mastership. One can do Reiki on oneself and others after being attuned to Level I, but Level II is required for more advanced energy transfer, including transfer over distance and time. And only a Reiki Master/Teacher, a designation achieved through ART and Level III instruction and attunement, can conduct Reiki empowerment sessions and attune others.
Level I and II Reiki attunements are available on a private basis: $150 for Level I and $200 for Level II. Call Anne at 517.420.8550 to discuss availability of and requirements for attunement sessions.
